600×600 is the exact digital-photo format for the US DV (green card) lottery, the standard 2×2-inch US passport photo at 300 DPI, and a common square for marketplace thumbnails and profile photos. This page is preset to 600×600 with a 200 KB budget — enough for near-maximum JPEG quality at this size. Non-square photos are center-cropped to the square.
Use the dedicated DV lottery photo page instead — it presets the official 240 KB ceiling and, more importantly, spells out the composition rules (head size, background, expression) that PixFit cannot check but the State Department rejects on. The pixels and bytes are the easy half of that spec.
Phone photos are 4:3 or 3:2, so the square crop removes the sides. The crop here is centered — if your subject is off-center, crop the photo roughly square in your OS photo viewer first, then drop it here for the exact pixels and compression.
