400×400 is the profile-picture size X (Twitter) officially recommends — the minimum is 200×200, but uploading at 400×400 keeps the avatar sharp on high-DPI screens. Plenty of smaller forums, comment systems and app dashboards ask for the same square. This page is preset to exactly that: drop your photo and download the result. X caps profile uploads around 2 MB, and a 400×400 JPEG at high quality is a few tens of kilobytes — so the 100 KB preset target is generous and you'll almost always get maximum quality with room to spare. The number that matters on this page is the pixels, not the bytes.
Most sites display round avatars, so the corners of your square get masked off — keep the subject centered and give it breathing room. And note the re-encode here strips the photo's EXIF metadata (GPS location, camera details) as a side effect, which for a public avatar is exactly what you want.
