What the UPPSC portal actually asks for

Every Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission application — PCS, RO/ARO, the lecturer and engineering cadres, all of it — now runs through One Time Registration at otr.pariksha.nic.in, and as the commission’s homepage puts it, your OTR number is the only registration number for any post it advertises. The photo and signature you upload there follow you everywhere. The official spec, from UPPSC’s own scanning guideline (a table, verbatim): photograph 5 cm wide × 6 cm high, scanned at 200 DPI, true colour, less than 50 KB; signature 6 cm wide × 3 cm high, 200 DPI, true colour, less than 30 KB. The upload form itself accepts .jpg/.jpeg only. This page has PixFit preset to 394×472 pixels — exactly 5×6 cm at 200 DPI, with the DPI written into the JPEG — at a 48 KB target: 49,152 bytes stays under “50 KB” whichever way the server counts kilobytes. Drop your photo, adjust the crop, download, upload.

The spec is in centimetres — the pixels tools sell are guesses

UPPSC publishes the photo size in centimetres and DPI, not pixels. The arithmetic is fixed: 5×6 cm at the official 200 DPI is 394×472 pixels. But search “UPPSC photo resize” and the top tool sells 180×216 pixels — that’s what 5×6 cm works out to at roughly 91 DPI, under half the resolution the commission’s own guideline specifies — and claims the signature may be PNG or TIFF, formats the portal’s own upload input doesn’t accept. The same tools state a 20 KB minimum for the photo and 10 KB for the signature; the official table has no minimum at all, only the caps. We couldn’t verify a floor anywhere first-party, so this page hedges it honestly: the preset pads the output to at least 22 KB with spec-valid padding every image parser ignores. If there’s no floor, a 22 KB file is simply a valid file under 50 KB; if the form enforces the floor the tools claim, you clear it. Either way you don’t fail.

One upload, every UPPSC post — and your hall ticket

The OTR flow makes this photo unusually consequential: per UPPSC’s own user manual, photo and signature upload is Step 2 of creating the account — right after the email/mobile OTP, before you’ve even set a password. Whatever you upload then auto-fills every application you file afterwards, and the photo and signature are printed on your hall ticket. The guideline’s own warning: if your signature on the answer script doesn’t match the one on the hall ticket, “the applicant will be disqualified”. The good news is that OTR details, photo included, can be modified 24×7 after login — and the UPPSC candidate dashboard has a “Sync Your Data With OTR Server” button to pull a corrected photo into a pending application. Get the file right once and the rest is plumbing.

The signature: 6×3 cm, under 30 KB, in full

Sign with a pen on white paper — in full: the guideline says initials are not sufficient and capital-letter signatures are not permitted, and it must be your own hand. Note the shape: UPPSC’s signature box is wider than it is tall (6×3 cm — landscape), the reverse of the photo. For the signature pass, change the Exact size field to 472x236 and the target to 29 KB. The signature tool does the cleanup automatically — finds the ink, trims to it, whitens the paper — or draw one there directly. The “true colour” row applies to the signature too: scan it in colour mode, not black-and-white document mode.

No scanner? A phone photo works

The official procedure assumes a scanner: paste a printed photo on white paper, sign next to it, scan at 200 DPI, crop into two files. If you have a scanner, that works. If you don’t: a phone photo of your face (or of your signature on paper) drops straight into PixFit — the crop handles the 5:6 shape, the encoder lands the byte target, and the 200 DPI setting is written into the file so it prints at the intended 5×6 cm. The portal’s own upload widget has a final crop step, so small framing differences are fixable there.

UPPSC is not UPSC

Easy mix-up: this page is the state commission (Uttar Pradesh PSC, Prayagraj). The union commission — UPSC, of civil-services fame — runs a different portal (upsconline.gov.in) with a completely different spec, 20 KB–300 KB with pixel ranges. If that’s the form in front of you, use the UPSC page instead.

Privacy — and the real portals

Registration happens at otr.pariksha.nic.in; adverts and the candidate dashboard live at uppsc.up.nic.in. Both publish the scanning guideline publicly — no login needed to read any number on this page. A photo tied to your government-job profile has no business passing through a resizer’s server, and most UPPSC photo tools are exactly that: server-side uploads. PixFit runs entirely in your browser — the photo never leaves your device — and the re-encode strips EXIF metadata (including GPS) as a side effect. An iPhone HEIC drops straight in; the output is a portal-ready JPG. Applying across state lines too? The full verified table covers TNPSC, Kerala PSC’s Thulasi and sixty more.

Spec source: UPPSC’s own “GuideLines for Scanning Photograph with Signature” PDF (OTR document section, uppsc.up.nic.in), the OTR platform’s guideline page and upload form at otr.pariksha.nic.in, and UPPSC’s official OTR user manual, all read July 2026. Pixel figures are the official centimetres converted at the official 200 DPI. These numbers can change — if the upload screen disagrees, believe the portal.
