What OPSC actually asks for

The Odisha Public Service Commission’s own scanning guideline — published on opsc.gov.in under Guidelines, no login needed — sets three uploads for every online application: a photograph, a signature, and a left thumb impression. The photograph spec, verbatim: a recent passport-style colour picture against a light (preferably white) background, 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, file size between 25 KB and 100 KB, JPG/JPEG only, scanned at a minimum of 200 DPI in true colour. This page has PixFit preset to 276×354 pixels — exactly 3.5×4.5 cm at 200 DPI, with the DPI written into the JPEG — at a 95 KB target and a 26 KB minimum, so the output lands inside the window whichever way the server counts kilobytes. Drop your photo, adjust the crop, download, upload.

The 25 KB floor is real — and popular tools get it wrong

OPSC’s window has a floor: under 25 KB is as much a rejection as over 100 KB. That floor is exactly where recycled photos fail — a picture that’s been through WhatsApp or a “compress to 20 KB” tool is often already below it, and ordinary compressors can only push size down. PixFit pads the file up to the minimum with spec-valid data every image parser ignores, so a too-small photo passes without re-shooting. Meanwhile the top “OPSC photo resizer” results sell 200×240 pixels for the photo — a size that matches no number in the commission’s guideline at any DPI — give the signature the 140×60 box that actually belongs to IBPS bank exams, and at least one states the photo floor as 20 KB: a 21 KB file passes that tool’s check and fails the real one.

The spec is in centimetres — here’s the honest pixel arithmetic

Like UPPSC, OPSC publishes centimetres and a scanner DPI, not pixels. At the guideline’s own minimum of 200 DPI, 3.5×4.5 cm works out to 276×354 pixels, and the signature/thumb box of 3.5×1.5 cm to 276×118. Those are the sizes this page presets — scanned-at-200-DPI equivalents, with the DPI stamped in the file so it prints at the intended physical size. A higher-DPI scan is fine too as long as the bytes stay inside the window; what you shouldn’t do is upload the tiny thumbnails the garbled tools produce.

Signature and left thumb impression — the third file nobody mentions

OPSC wants two more files, both 3.5×1.5 cm (preferred) and 10–50 KB: your signature — black ink or gel pen on white paper, signed by you and nobody else — and a left thumb impression in blue or black stamp-pad ink on white paper. Both are printed on your hall ticket, and the guideline is blunt about the stakes: if the signature or thumb impression on your answer script doesn’t match the hall ticket, the applicant will be disqualified. For either file, change the Exact size field to 276x118 and the target to 48 KB — or use the signature tool, which finds the ink, trims to it and whitens the paper automatically. Scan both in colour mode (“true color”), not black-and-white document mode.

No scanner? A phone photo works

The guideline’s procedure assumes a scanner and even suggests MS Paint for resizing — which resizes pixels but can’t target a byte window at all, let alone a floor. If you don’t have a scanner: photograph your face (or the signed/inked paper) with your phone in good light, drop it here, and the crop handles the shape while the encoder lands the bytes. An iPhone HEIC drops straight in; the output is a portal-ready JPG. If an upload is rejected as unclear, the guideline says you can edit the application and re-upload — but a clean file first time saves the round trip.

Live right now

OPSC published three fresh advertisements on 18 July 2026 — Assistant Horticulture Officer, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon and Assistant Fisheries Officers (Advt. 04–06 of 2026-27) — and the Horticulture advert’s own text sets the application window at 28 July to 28 August 2026, 5 PM. Applications run through the commission’s e-Chayan portal at opscechayan.in, reached from the Apply Online button on opsc.gov.in. The same photo rules serve the recurring big-ticket exams too — Odisha Civil Services, Odisha Judicial Service and the teaching cadres all flow through the same portal.

Privacy — and the real portal

Everything on this page was read from www.opsc.gov.in — no login needed to check any number here. A photo tied to your government-job application shouldn’t detour through a resizer’s server, and most OPSC photo tools are exactly that: server-side uploads. PixFit runs entirely in your browser — the photo never leaves your device — and the re-encode strips EXIF metadata (including GPS) as a side effect. Applying to other commissions too? See UPPSC, TNPSC, MPPSC and the full verified table.

Spec source: OPSC’s own “Guidelines for scanning and Upload of Photograph, Signature & Left Thumb Impression” (Guidelines section, www.opsc.gov.in) and the commission’s live advertisement PDFs, read July 2026. Pixel figures are the official centimetres converted at the official 200 DPI scanner setting. These numbers can change — if the upload screen disagrees, believe the portal.
