What MPSC actually publishes — and what it doesn’t

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission’s General Instructions to Candidates (revised 10 June 2025, on mpsc.gov.in) spends a full section on the photo and signature you upload to the Online Application System — and not one line of it is a file size. The official rules are about the picture itself: the photograph must be taken within one year of the application date, passport-size and in colour, showing only your face (with hair), facing the camera. The signature must be your own, in black ink on clean white paper, and should match the signature on your other documents and bank records — initials are not permitted, in Marathi or English. What MPSC does not publish, anywhere public, is a KB or pixel spec for either file: those limits live inside the application form at mpsconline.gov.in and appear when you upload. Whatever the upload screen says, believe it — and type it into the fields above; PixFit fits any size and byte range, floors included.

The background rule is the reverse of everywhere else

Here’s the detail that catches people reusing a passport photo: MPSC’s instructions ask for a backdrop that is generally a solid red, green or blue curtain — patterned, multi-coloured or reflective backgrounds are explicitly disallowed. Nearly every other portal on our verified table wants white or light; MPSC is one of the very few that names solid colours instead. The photo that sailed through your passport or UPSC application is a white-background photo. PixFit can’t change your backdrop — no honest resizer can — so if your only photo is on white, this is the one rule worth a fresh picture in front of a plain coloured wall or curtain. The other content rules: no tears, folds, stamps, ink blots or pin-holes on the photo, and your face must be clearly recognizable — not too dark, not blown out.

Four tools, four different “official” specs — all invented

Search “MPSC photo size” and the top results confidently state numbers: one sells 275×354 px at 20–50 KB, another 413×531 px at 20–50 KB, a third 125–130×150–170 px under 50 KB, a fourth 200×230 px with a 140×60 signature — which are IBPS’s numbers, pasted onto MPSC. Four contradictory specs, none citing an MPSC document, because there is no MPSC document that states one. The commission’s instructions and its 2026 advertisements simply don’t publish photo/signature file limits. A page that promises you “the official MPSC photo size” in pixels is guessing; the form is the authority.

The numbers that are official: PDF certificates, 50–500 KB

MPSC’s advertisements do publish exact figures for one thing: uploaded documents. The document table in Advt 017/2026 (the Maharashtra Group-C Services Combine Preliminary Examination 2026) lists every reservation-claim certificate — Divyang, ex-serviceman, sportsperson, orphan, part-time graduate, earthquake- and project-affected, domicile — as PDF, minimum 50 KB, maximum 500 KB. Both ends are enforced: a crisp one-page scan can land under 50 KB and be refused. This page is preset to that window — drop a photo or scan of your certificate and PixFit produces a one-page PDF between 52 KB and 480 KB: under 500 KB whichever way the server counts kilobytes, and padded above the floor with spec-valid padding if your scan is unusually clean. Multi-page certificate? The images-to-PDF page combines several scans under the same cap, and compress-PDF shrinks an existing PDF to it. Note the advert’s other rule: if you claim none of those reservations, the prelim application needs no document upload at all — your photo and signature come from the profile you already made.

One profile, every Maharashtra government job — and your hall ticket

The stakes on this one upload got much higher in 2026: by a Government Resolution of 5 May 2026, recruitment for all Group A, B and C posts in the state moved to MPSC — which is why the commission now runs combined exams (the Group-C Combine and the Gazetted Civil Services Combine) with application windows through the year. Your OAS profile, with its photo and signature, is reused for every one of them, and since June 2025 the profile also goes through a mandatory KYC step. The signature is printed into the process everywhere: MPSC’s instructions warn that if the signature you produce at the exam, interview or physical test doesn’t match the uploaded one — or the person in the photo doesn’t match the person who turns up — admission is refused and it’s treated as attempted malpractice, with action at the commission’s discretion. An unclear photo or signature alone is grounds to refuse entry. Scan the signature well once: black pen, white paper, full signature — the signature tool trims to the ink and whitens the paper automatically.

Privacy — and the real portals

Advertisements and instructions are at mpsc.gov.in; applications happen at mpsconline.gov.in. Certificates with your disability record, service history or caste claim are exactly the files that shouldn’t pass through a resizer’s server — and most “MPSC resize” tools are server-side uploads. PixFit runs entirely in your browser: the file never leaves your device, and the re-encode strips EXIF metadata (including GPS) as a side effect. Applying to other commissions too? See UPSC (the union commission — a different portal with a real published spec), TNPSC, UPPSC and Kerala PSC.

Sources: MPSC’s General Instructions to Candidates (revised 10 June 2025), Advertisement No. 017/2026 with its July 2026 corrigenda, and the commission’s FAQ dated 4 July 2026 — all read from mpsc.gov.in in July 2026. MPSC publishes no photo/signature byte or pixel figures in any of them; the 50–500 KB PDF window is the advert’s own document table. If the upload screen disagrees with anything here, believe the portal.
