The XAT application (xatonline.in, registration July 15 – December 6, 2026 for the January 3, 2027 exam) takes a scanned photograph and signature. Every current prep guide carries the classic window this exam family has used for years: photograph 200×230 pixels, 20–50 KB; signature 140×60 pixels, 10–20 KB, scanned at 200 DPI — black ink on white paper. This page is preset for the photograph: exactly 200×230, best JPEG quality inside 20–50 KB, and the DPI label field writes the stated 200 DPI into the JPEG header so the file matches the guides' wording end to end. A file in that window also satisfies the looser limits on the official instructions page (below), so it passes every reading.
Here's the part other guides don't tell you: the official xatonline.in registration instructions currently carry two copies of each guideline block with different numbers. One photo block says keep the scan “within 1MB”; the other still says to adjust your scanner if the file is “more than 50KB”. One signature block says “within 1MB”; the other says “between 20KB – 50KB”. No pixel dimensions appear anywhere on the official page. That reads like a spec that was relaxed to 1 MB with leftover copy from the older 50 KB era — but the only authority that matters is the upload widget itself: if the portal shows an error with different limits, the portal wins.
For the signature, the prep-site consensus (10–20 KB at 140×60) and the official page's own “20KB – 50KB” line genuinely conflict — they only overlap at exactly 20 KB. Practical route: type 140x60 into Exact size and 10-20kb into Target first (the window the widget has historically enforced). If the portal rejects it for being too small, re-run with 20-50kb — PixFit pads a JPEG to a floor with spec-valid padding when the best encode comes in under it, which is common for a clean signature scan at these dimensions. No scanner handy? The signature drawing pad draws-and-fits one to whichever window you set — draw your real signature, since XAT matches it against the one you produce on exam day.
The official instructions list JPG, JPEG, PNG as accepted formats — PNG is a recent addition, but a JPEG passes everywhere, and it's what PixFit produces. The instructions are written for flatbed scanners (200 DPI, true colour), but a straight-on phone photo of your signature on white paper works if it's evenly lit and cropped to the ink; iPhone users can drop a HEIC straight in and upload the JPEG that comes out. One rule PixFit can't help with: the signature you upload must match the one you produce on the admit card and attendance sheet on exam day — the official page warns a mismatch can disqualify you. Sign naturally, not decoratively.
