The online renewal photo file rules

The State Department's Online Passport Renewal system accepts a digital photo that is a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF file, between 54 KB and 10 MB, in colour, taken in the last 6 months — submitted as the original, unedited photo with no filters or digital changes. This page is preset to the 54 KB–10 MB window with no pixel size set, which is deliberate: the renewal application has its own reposition-and-crop step, so you submit the full frame — State's guidance is that the bottom of the photo should sit at the edge of your shoulders, near where they connect to your arms. Leave the Exact size field above empty.

Where's the 600×600 pixel rule? There isn't one

Resizer sites widely claim the online renewal wants a square JPEG between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels. Those numbers are real — but they belong to the State Department's visa digital image spec (DS-160/DS-260 and the DV lottery), not to the renewal upload page, which publishes no pixel dimensions at all and crops in-portal instead. (Even the 54 KB floor here matches the visa spec's maximum-compression arithmetic at 600×600 — likely where the conflation started.) If you're actually preparing a visa photo, use the US visa photo page or the DV lottery page; for the renewal, don't crop to a square something the portal wants to crop itself.

Under 54 KB? Fix the source, not just the bytes

A photo lands under 54 KB for one usual reason: it was sent through a messaging app that recompressed it — State's own guidance says do not send the image via text message. PixFit can pad a JPEG up to the 54 KB floor with a spec-valid comment segment, but padding adds no detail, and this portal is the wrong place to gamble on quality: the photo passes an automated pre-check and then a human employee reviews it, and State says unacceptable photos are the number one reason applications get put on hold. If your only copy is a small, soft, message-app version, get the original file (“actual size”/document mode) or take a new photo.

Over 10 MB, or an iPhone HEIC?

If your photo already fits the window, upload the original untouched and close this tab — HEIC is accepted natively here, so iPhone users don't even need a format conversion. The legitimate PixFit case is a file over 10 MB: a 48 MP phone photo or a full-resolution camera JPEG can exceed the cap, and PixFit finds the best quality that fits under 10 MB while keeping full resolution — at a ceiling this generous the result is visually indistinguishable. Keep your original file; the re-encode also strips EXIF metadata (including the GPS position of wherever it was taken) as a side effect.

No scans, no filters — and renewing by mail is different

State is explicit: do not take a photo of a printed photo or scan a physical photo to make the digital file — unlike the visa spec, the renewal page has no scanned-print route at all. “Unedited” means your appearance: no filters, no retouching, no AI cleanup. Re-encoding bytes at best quality is the same plumbing every camera app does; enhancement is what gets photos rejected. And if you're renewing by mail (Form DS-82), that route takes a printed 2×2 inch photo stapled to the form — no digital file at all, and this page can't help.

What PixFit can't check

Everything the reviewing employee actually looks at: plain white or off-white background with no shadows, texture or lines; facing the camera directly, head centred and fully visible, no tilt; both eyes open, neutral expression, avoid showing teeth; eyeglasses removed unless for documented religious or medical reasons; sharp focus with no grain or pixelation. PixFit fixes bytes only. Not everyone can renew online — the portal checks eligibility when you start — and if the photo has an issue after submission, State contacts you by letter or email. Check the current guidance at travel.state.gov before you submit. Renewing elsewhere? See the UK passport, Ireland passport and Canada citizenship pages.
